Dr Nathan Moore shares insights on sustainable water systems with visiting UPL University Faculty

Last week, faculty members from UPL University of Sustainable Technology attended an engaging session led by the 100 Million Initiative’s Dr Nathan Moore. This event was part of a faculty development programme visit organised by the Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development. As a NSERC Research Fellow in Water and Health at the University of Oxford, Nathan’s research focuses on environmental health risks, drinking water treatment, water reuse, and strengthening the resilience of water systems in the face of challenges including climate change. His work was of particular interest to UPL visitors Mr. Sudeep Deepak Wadia, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Dr. Snehal R. Lokhandwala, Professor of Environmental Science and Technology and Dean of Science and Sustainability, both of whom have a research focus on wastewater management.
Drawing on research and practical examples from around the world, Dr Moore discussed advances in wastewater management, water treatment, and sustainable water system design. He also discussed the value of interdisciplinary research and collaboration in addressing complex water and public health challenges.
The exchange continued beyond the wider session, with Dr Moore and Dr Lokhandwala meeting to explore how their respective areas of expertise could complement one another towards supporting water service providers. Dr Moore was excited to learn more about how Dr Lokhandwala’s expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning could support real-time monitoring of water and wastewater quality, strengthen operational decision-making for treatment processes such as advanced oxidation that are becoming more common due to climate change, and help identify potential cost savings for water utilities.
The session formed part of a broader programme to enhance Oxford and UPL University's collaborative efforts to strengthen research-based learning, curriculum development, and sustainability education. This session on sustainable water system design was one of many opportunities during UPL’s visit to engage in discussions on emerging research methodologies and explore cross-institutional partnerships on sustainability-related research and teaching.
